What Are Affiliate Salon Programs?
Affiliate salon programs are a way for professional haircare brands to reward you the hairstylist and salon owners for recommending their products to your salon clients or website visitors.
With more salon brands selling directly to consumers it may be time for you to rethink your retail game.
The days of big brands only selling their products to hair salons which then turn around and sell the products to clients if over.
With the online boom, we have seen the last few years with the likes of Amazon.com Ulta, and Sephora the professional haircare industry is now free for all.
If you the salon owner are to compete it’s time to change your retail strategy.
Hair salons are adding e-commerce functionality to their websites where clients can purchase directly from manufacturers like Redken, Loreal, Amika, and many more to mention later.
Does this mean to tear down your retail shelves and return all your products back to distributors?
No not what I’m suggesting!
Right now is a great opportunity for hair salon owners and suite renters to maximize their retail sales both in-salon and online by adding affiliate salon programs to their revenues.

How Does Affiliate Salon Programs Work?
Big product company names like AVEDA have launched their online affiliate salon programs where salon owners recommend specific products to clients.
Clients can go to your website and click on an affiliate link sending them to the product you recommend, and when they purchase, you will get a commission.
Most brands will allow you to promote their products on your website and social media accounts.
There can be limitations and rules to follow, so be sure to check with each company’s guidelines.
The easiest way to promote products is by blogging, and if you are promoting on your website, make sure to add your location.
Adding location will allow people in your area to find their favorite products and purchase them from you.
Setup an eCommerce shop on your website and add all the products you want to sell online.
You can add multiple brands if you want, but be careful not to overdo it.
Stick with a trusted brand that you genuinely love and recommend based on your professional opinion.
You can even sell styling tools like the Beachwaver, and the Paul Mitchell brand of appliances.
When you recommend the product or tool your clients need to maintain their hair at home, you will receive a commission directly from the manufacturer.
Some companies pay you up to 30% commission on each referral.
I know what you think is less than what you would make if you sold it in your salon, right?
Yes, it is, but you save on purchasing overstock, which can sit on shelves for months.

Should You Start Working With Affiliate Salon Programs?
Listen, you know what is best for your business.
I can tell you is looking at how professionally branded hair products are adding salon affiliate programs at a rapid rate; this is the future of salon retail.

As a hairdresser for over 30 years and salon owner, I’m sad that hair product companies have decided to cross over and into big-box retailers and amazon sales.
What are we to do as business owners?
Are we to keep chasing companies that say they will never sell directly to consumers or traditional retail shops?
I promise you they will eventually go where the money is.
And honestly, who is to blame them?
Salon retail sales are down more than they have ever been.
We have divided the industry into multi chair hair salons where hairstylist deemed themselves as nonsales people.
Salon suite renters aren’t able to set up significant retail areas and again, are not sales motivated toward retail.
As hair pros, we are left with our favorite product lines to peddle their products elsewhere.
So back to the question, should you start working with salon affiliate programs?
I say if you can’t beat em, join them.
Your clients need the products to maintain their hair at home.
When someone buys online, they feel like they are getting a good deal.
Let the product company do all the heavy lifting; all you have to do is continue to serve your customers and recommend the products you trust will be best for them.
